Some statistics about poverty in Maryland
· one in 10 Marylanders (approximately 572,400 people) lived in poverty including 13.3 percent of children and 7.6 percent of seniors
· despite the fact that Maryland is considered one of the wealthiest states in the country with a median income of $71,707
· Maryland Alliance for the Poor (MAP) maintains poverty indicators in the 24 Maryland jurisdictions
· the poverty line - $23,492 for a family of four
Volunteers Needed:
· Senior Adults
o Assistance in filling out the, sometimes, cumbersome forms with nearly 100+ questions.
o Assistance in receiving housing subsidies.
o Medicare and aging support groups
o Assistance in establishing access to local home health workers
o Enable assistance in receiving companionship from youth participants
· Adults disabled
o Development of support groups concentrating on autoimmune and mental illness.
o Assistance in establishing workplace accommodations.
o Assistance in filling out job applications
o Assistance in finding suitable living arrangements
o Assistance in establishing access to local home health workers
